Google and MSN followed by AOL and a small number of search engines dominate the internet!

Websites serve one of two functions or both.

• Sales a source of new business - a means of prospecting
• Communication a means of keeping in touch / communication

If your website is intended to be to generate new business then it needs to come up in Google etc on the first or second page - few people slog through to the 19th page of results.

That being the case how does your website fair?

Reveals that most fall well short of being optimized for search engines and yet these are areas where people using the Internet are regularly searching for information.

To be blunt many are hopeless

• Many have very poor navigation
• Too many say too little and are not really doing much good at all
• Extraordinarily many MD's far from being concerned simply say we do not expect to receive enquiries from the internet.

Why bother with a website in the first place?

For those that do make the effort it is worthwhile a reasonable website could generate one serious lead per day - which might be the same strike rate as a salesperson. Yet no sales person can be on hand 24/7. A website does not phone in sick, need time off and can handle multiple people at once.

Traffic on websites tends is not uniform and you do get spikes in activity - challenging for a company to handle with real sales people - but no problem for a website.

Do not blame search engines

Currently the print industry is in turmoil with household names going bust almost every week - one can see this as an opportunity or a threat - of course it is both - but when a print firm goes bust it means buyers need to find new suppliers.

Of course in many cases there will be people knocking on the door, but buyers will also be forced in to searching for new suppliers. If you are not coming up in search engines then you are going to be missing out on that new business.
