How much does that item weigh?

Q. How much will this item weigh?

Answer

  1. Calculate the surface area of the job in millimetres.
  2. Divide by 1 million.
  3. Multiply by the paper weight
    - if the cover is heavier than the text -
you will need to calculate both separately and then add them together.

Example

a 4pp A4 leaflet on 130 gsm paper

297 x 420 = 124,740

124,740 / 1,000,000 = 0.12474

0.124,740 * 130 = 16.2162 gsm or just over 16 gsm

No allowance for ink has been made in this formula, but paper is absorbent and can pick up moisture from the atmosphere. Therefore its weight can fluctuate slightly.

Paper is sold often plus or minus a 10% tolerance on the specified weight (although it seldom does vary so wildly).

Plus or minus a gram - it will be somewhere near 16gsm

The above calculation may be some what of a drag but it is available as a short formula in Excel.
